Key West Travel! Keepin' it Local!
70 miles west of Key West is a group of 7 islands collectively known as Dry Tortugas National Park. The largest brick masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere, Fort Jefferson, is located on one of these islands, Garden Key. Dr. Samuel Mudd, the doctor who became infamous for re-setting the leg of John Wilkes Booth after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln, was imprisoned at the fort. He worked with Dr. Porter from Key West to find a cure for Yellow Fever. It was this work that earned him a pardon from Andrew Johnson in 1869, four years after his conviction and an attempted escape from Fort Jefferson.
